How to Start Homeschooling

The new school year is around the corner for many families and GSHE is here to make it easy and successful. Don’t worry – you’re in the right place and it’s far easier than many people expect.

First, if your child is enrolled somewhere already, formally file a withdrawal with the school and keep documentation for your records. If it is with your local public school, the school district (SAU) likely has their policies available online. Do this before the school year begins in your area.

Next, file a home education notification with your choice of your local school district office, a nonpublic school, or the NH Department of Education. Our website has optional templates you can use.

You’re all set!

We encourage you to take time to “deschool,” meaning a break to observe how your child learns, figure out what is important to you, and explore potential resources that will accomplish your objectives. You don’t have to figure it out right away, or in the first week, or even the first month. What works for one family may not work for yours, and that’s ok. The beauty of homeschooling is the freedom to fit your family’s unique needs and goals.

Join GSHE by creating an account on our website. This will give you complete access to all of our guides, massive resource database, and forum communities.

Our Homeschool Methods page has descriptions of common approaches to homeschooling, and online quizzes to help you figure out which might fit your child and family. There are also lists of resources that go along with them. You are in control of the what, when, how, who, and why for your child’s learning. While that can be a bit overwhelming at first, know that you have all the time you need. You can change your mind as you go to adjust to what works, and have an extensive community available to support you every step of the way.

You know and love your child best. You make big decisions for them every day, and are more than capable of handling your child’s education.

You don’t need a big budget, new curriculum, fancy things, or another substitute classroom experience to give your child a meaningful and engaging education.

GSHE has a huge database of resources so you can find what fits your needs, objectives, and budget. We have a massive collection of entirely free resources, and several teacher discounts that extend to homeschoolers.

You are not alone and absolutely can do this!
