Many new(er) homeschoolers struggle to meet people, and it is usually because they don’t extend themselves a bit. A little tough love here, my friends. Community is what you make of it. Unlike traditional school environments where our kids are with a cohort of more-or-less the same kids for their entire school year for several years, homeschoolers have the freedom to find and create their own “tribe.” That requires some of us to get out of our comfort zones a bit.
Consider hosting some kind of seasonal activity, post it to our forum community and Facebook group as an event so everyone can see it and join you! Here are a bunch of ideas:
Local libraries are usually eager to work with homeschooling families. Reach out to them to help host activities and events such as game days, craft activities, book clubs, or something else of shared interest.

Get out there and meet new people and make friends!
- Do a series of different spring-themed art projects
- Origami activity to make frogs and birds
- Raise monarch butterflies, observe their life cycle, and plant butterfly-friendly flowers
- Do a weather unit study and track weather over several weeks
- Find ways to reuse, recycle, and renew household materials
- Plan a community garden for the season
- Visit a new playground each week
- Learn bicycle safety
- Study pollinators and observe which plants they are attracted to and repelled from
- Host an art show or science fair
- Learn new cooking or baking skills
- Host a frisbee golf game
- Host a make-your-own pizza party
- Build a bird feeder, figure out what type of food various birds eat, and do bird watching along with a journal
- Create a spring-themed journal or sketchbook and go on nature hikes
- Start a woodworking project
- Make a PVC pipe marshmallow blaster
- Organize a food drive for a local food pantry – makes a great service project!
- Plant a green-bean or sunflower teepee/tent
- Collaborate on a puppet show and give a performance at a senior center
- Host a peep diorama contest
- Help seniors in the community with spring clean-up of their yards
