October is Learning Disability Awareness Month

Each October we recognize National Learning Disabilities Awareness Month and highlight how many families are taking on the awesome responsibility of supporting their children with learning differences. Too often, these students “fall through the cracks” in traditional schools, even with IEPs and 504 plans in place. Be assured: as homeschoolers, you can support your child’s unique needs—and you are not alone!

At GSHE, we often hear from new homeschooling families with questions such as:

  • What happens to IEP or 504 services once my child is homeschooled?
  • How to I accommodate or modify my child’s learning to suit their needs?
  • How do I find the right supports, providers, or curricula for my child?
  • Where can I connect with other families who are walking a similar path?

Yes, you can homeschool a child with special needs in New Hampshire.
Families do not need to ask permission, provide diagnoses, or file extra paperwork—the standard notification process is all that’s required. The assessment is also not judged against other children; progress is determined based on each child’s age and ability.

It’s important to know, however, that once a child is no longer enrolled full-time in a district or chartered public school, most SAUs do not provide services. While that can feel intimidating at first, many parents discover that stepping away from the constant battles over services actually brings relief. Without being tied to rigid schedules or “pull-out” times, families are free to create a learning environment that fits their child, not the other way around.

Home education allows you to build a supportive, flexible, and nurturing plan that is truly individualized—designed around your child’s strengths, needs, and goals.
